Frequently Asked Questions About AAMFT Membership

How many members belong to AAMFT?

As of October 2020, AAMFT has over 22,000 members.

I need to transfer my membership to another category. How do I do that?

In order to transfer your membership appropriately to another category please complete and submit a transfer application.  You can access application information by clicking the red box at the top of the page that says "Join/Renew AAMFT."

What is the difference between renewing and reinstating my membership?

Reinstating your membership occurs when your membership has lapsed by 61 or more days. Reinstating puts you on a new billing cycle. Renewing occurs when you are considered a current, active member renewing on the same billing cycle. Renewing your membership occurs when you pay your dues 60 days or less from the date they expire.

What are Optional Engagement Programs?

AAMFT offers two types of engagement programs: geographic and topical. For Geographic Engagement Programs, members can join programs in various U.S. States and Canadian provinces that focus on advocacy, education, and networking with a local flavor. Topical Engagement Programs have a variety of topics and specialties that are important for MFTs, these groups offer a wide array of ways to connect to MFTs with your focus.

Can I add Engagement Programs at any point in my membership?

Yes. You can add them at any point in your membership cycle, but they will conform to your dues billing cycle. For example, if your membership expires in September but you add the Engagement Program in March, you will only receive 6 months of membership in the Engagement Program because your national membership expires in September. AAMFT DOES NOT accept pro-rated payments for joining mid-cycle.

How long does it take to process an application after it has been received?

If applying online, membership is active as soon as we receive payment. If your application contains ethical issues, it can take up to 30 days to process. If you are mailing a copy of the application, it can also take 30 days from the date we receive it to process your application. We strongly encourage online applications whenever possible.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 situation, AAMFT staff is now working remotely and unavailable to receive and process postal deliveries. Any applications, payments, or other correspondence sent through the mail will be processed as soon as we are able to physically return to the office.

Once I sign up, what cycle is my membership on? Calendar Year?

Your membership will reflect the current time period for which you are applying. For instance, if you sign up on November 15th, your membership begin date will be December 1st and will expire the following year on November 30th.

Dues are by anniversary and runs from the time you join/renew until the following year during that same time of the year.  You will receive your first email 90 days prior to your expiration date, another one at 60 days, and several more after that. You will also receive a paper invoice the month after your membership has been dropped.

*Dues and fees paid to AAMFT are non-refundable.
