Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
Oregon has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). There is also an MFT Intern designation.
Intern Registration Requirements
- A graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from an accredited program.
- Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 clock hours, including 280 direct client contact hours.
- A plan established to complete hours of work experience and supervision.
- This registration is limited to five years.

Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- A graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from an accredited program.
- Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 clock hours, including 280 direct client contact hours.
- Passed the exam approved by the board.
- Completion of three years of post-degree supervised clinical experience as an MFT.
- A minimum of 1,900 supervised direct client contact hours, 750 of which must be with couples and families.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.
- The requirements of licensure in the previous state must be equivalent or exceed the requirements for Oregon licensure, as determined by the Board.
- Oregon recognized the California exam, as well as the AMFTRB exam.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every two years.
