Ontario Provincial Resources

Registration

The information below is collected from regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your province for the most up-to-date information.

In Ontario, MFTs are regulated as Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) at the provincial level. RPs are regulated through the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Anyone using the title “psychotherapist” and holding themselves out as qualified to practice as a psychotherapist in Ontario must register with this College or another regulatory college whose members are mental health practitioners.

There are two major categories of regulation: Registered Psychotherapist, and Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying).

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

In order to be an RP (Qualifying), an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Received a master’s degree from a recognized program or successfully completed a program in psychotherapy or the indigenous practice of psychotherapy recognized by the College
  • Complete the Professional Practice and Jurisprudence e-Learning Module

Registered Psychotherapist

In order to be an RP, an applicant must meet the requirements to be an RP (Qualifying) and the following requirements:

  • 450 direct client contact hours
  • 100 hours of clinical supervision
  • Successful completion of the Registration Exam

In order to practice without supervision, an RP must have completed 1,000 direct client contact hours and 150 hours of clinical supervision during their career. If moving to/from Quebec or Nova Scotia, you may register using a different path.

Labour Mobility

As party to the Labour Mobility Act of 2009, the College is legally required to accept the professional qualifications of individuals with "equivalent" certifications. Learn more.
