Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. North Dakota has two MFT licenses, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapy (LAMFT).
Associate Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- Must have a Master's or Doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field with equivalent coursework.
- Pass the exam prescribed by the Board.
- This license must be renewed annually, and may be renewed up to an additional four years.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- Must be currently licensed as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist or meet the same qualifications.
- Must complete two calendar years (at least 3,000 hours) of supervised clinical experience.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, including any history of disciplinary actions.
- The requirements of licensure in the previous state must be equivalent or exceed the requirements for North Dakota licensure, as determined by the Board.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every two years.
