Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
New York has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). There is also a limited permit.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- A master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from a program accredited by COAMFTE or approved by the New York Education Department.
- Passed the exam approved by the board.
- Completion of supervised post-degree work experience as an MFT.
- A minimum of 1,500 client contact hours,
- Must be supervised under a board-approved supervisor.
- One hour a week, or four hours a month must be in-person individual or group supervision.
- This experience must be completed while under a limited permit.

- A limited permit is available to an individual that has completed all requirements except examination and/or post-degree supervised clinical experience.
- This license is valid for two years, but may be extended for up to two additional one-year periods.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.
- Must present evidence of having completed 5 years of licensed practice in the 10 years prior to applying for licensure in New York.
- If the applicant cannot provide evidence, the applicant must apply for initial licensure in New York. The Board will evaluate whether the qualifications are substantially similar to the requirements for New York MFT licensure.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every three years.
