Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
Montana has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). There is also a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure Candidate.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- A master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from a recognized educational institution, or a program accredited by COAMFTE.
- Must include a supervised practicum and an internship or externship that includes a minimum of 500 hours of direct client contact.
- Once the education requirements are complete, an applicant should register as a Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure Candidate to complete the supervised experience requirement for full licensure.
- The MFT Candidate must submit a plan of supervision to the Board, and register annually.
- Passed the exam approved by the board.
- Completion of 3,000 hours of supervised experience.
- 1,000 hours must be face-to-face client contact, half of which must be with couples and families.
- Up to 500 hours may be accumulated while in graduate training.
- 200 hours of direct supervision, of which 75% must be individual.

Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.
- The requirements of licensure in the previous state must be equivalent or exceed the requirements for Montana licensure, as determined by the Board.
- An applicant may be exempt from the exam requirement if the applicant was licensed in another state with substantially equivalent requirements, and has passed an exam similar to the exam prescribed by the Board.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education annually.
