Licensure

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Massachusetts has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).

Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements

  • First pathway: Clinical membership with AAMFT and a passing exam score, OR
  • Meet the following requirements:
    • Master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or related field, with a clinical internship or practicum. 
    • Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time (3,360), post-degree supervised clinical experience in a hospital or clinic setting.
      • 200 hours of direct supervision, 100 of which must be individual.
      • Minimum of 1,000 hours must be face-to-face contact hours. 
      • Minimum of 500 hours must be face-to-face contact hours with couples or families. 
    • Passing exam score. 

Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)

  • The Board shall issue a license without examination to an applicant with a license in another state so long as that state's requirements are determined by the Board to be equivalent or exceed the requirements of Massachusetts.
  • Must pass the AMTRB exam.

Continuing Education

In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every two years.
