Licensure

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Michigan has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). There is also an Educational Limited MFT license.

Limited License Requirements

  • A master's degree or higher in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from an accredited program.
    • Must include a supervised practicum, with a minimum of 300 hours of direct client contact.
  • Must have this license to complete the supervised experience required for full licensure. 

Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements

  • A master's degree or higher in marriage and family therapy, or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from an accredited program. 
    • Must include a supervised practicum, with a minimum of 300 hours of direct client contact.
  • Passed the exam approved by the board (AMFTRB Exam).
  • Completion of a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised direct client contact.
    • Half of which must be direct client contact hours with families, couples, or subsystems of families.
    • One hour of supervision is required for each 5 hours of experience, for a total of not less than 200 hours.
      • 100 hours must be individual supervision. 

Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)

  • Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.
  • If licensed in another state for five or more years, the applicant is eligible for licensure by endorsement. 
  • If not licensed for five or more years in another state, the applicant will need to show that they meet Michigan's requirements for licensure.

Continuing Education

Michigan does not require continuing education for renewals. A license must be renewed biannually.
