Licensure

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.

Kentucky has one MFT license, and one permit; Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Marriage and Family Therapist Associate.

Marriage and Family Therapist Associate Permit Requirements

  • A master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related field with equivalent coursework, from a regionally accredited program. 
    • Must include a practicum with at least 300 hours of supervised client contact. 
  • Pass the national exam. Once an application for an associate permit is filed, the applicant is eligible to sit for the exam. 
  • A written contract with an approved supervisor, with the purpose of earning experience hours needed for full licensure. 
  • This permit is limited to five years. 

Marriage and Family Therapist Requirements

  • Completion of the requirements for the associate permit. 
  • Must complete two years of  supervised experience in the practice of marriage and family therapy.
  • Pass the national exam.

Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)

  • The requirements of licensure in the previous state must be equivalent or exceed the requirements for Kentucky licensure, as determined by the Board.

In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education annually.
