Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
Idaho has two MFT licenses, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). There is also an MFT Intern designation.
Associate License Requirements
- A master's degree or higher in marriage and family therapy or a related topic with equivalent coursework, as approved by the Board.
- Includes a supervised practicum with direct client contact.
- Pass the exam prescribed by the Board (AMFTRB exam).
- A plan established to complete hours of work experience and supervision.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- Completion of the education and practicum requirements required for the Associate license.
- Passed the exam approved by the board.
- Completion of 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised clinical experience.
- Must include a minimum of 2,000 hours of direct client contact, completed in no less than two years.
- 1,000 hours of which must be direct client contact with couples and families.
- Must be supervised under a board-approved supervisor.
- Completion of 200 hours of direct supervision, 100 of which must be supervised by a marriage and family therapist.
- No more than 100 hours of direct group supervision.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every year.
