Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
Hawaii has one MFT license, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and an MFT Intern designation.
Intern Designation Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited program with a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field with equivalent coursework.
- Must include a one year practicum, with at least 300 hours of supervised client contact.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- Completion of the requirements for the MFT Intern designation.
- Pass the exam prescribed by the Board (AMFTRB Exam).
- Application must be submitted prior to taking the exam.
- Completion of 1,000 hours of post-graduate marriage and family therapy practice.
- Must include 200 hours of clinical supervision in no less than two years.
- An individual who is a clinical member of AAMFT will be deemed to have met all educational and experience requirements.
Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action.
- The requirements of licensure in the previous state must be equivalent or exceed the requirements for Hawaii licensure, as determined by the Board.

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every three years.
Required hours
- To renew an LMFT license: 45 hours.
- A minimum of 6 credit hours required in ethics.
