SFTC24: Multicultural Paradigm
CE: 1.00
Speaker: Violeta Kadieva Ph. D., LMFT-S, AAMFT Approved Supervisor
There is significant supporting evidence in the literature about the reasons why counselors and therapists should be mindful of cultural differences as it pertains to family issues in therapy (Bagher & Alireza, 2016). Subramanian (2020) found an extended need for culturally competent training beyond the classroom by evaluating its importance as part of the supervisory experience. It has been found that multicultural competence training does not give specific outlines and detailed guidelines that would help clinicians when working through cross-cultural conflicts. Land-Closson (2017) looked at significant areas in social issues and multiculturalism, often overlooked but affecting the therapeutic relationship. This study was done with college students to explore the paradox of privilege and explain how Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) guides safe conversations about differences. In this workshop called the "Multicultural Paradigm" we will utilize a cultural soup intervention to decrease the anxiety of providing feedback about cultural and interpersonal conflicts in supervision. Cultural competence in supervision is a continuous process of development. In this workshop we will incorporate the cultural soup intervention, which is an innovative approach that has the potential to improve the supervision process, increase clients’ openness and willingness to make changes, and lead to major progress in the therapeutic work.
