The field of couple and family therapy (CFT) is growing rapidly worldwide, including in various African countries. One such country experiencing significant growth in this field is Kenya. In fact, Kenya is emerging as a leading nation on the continent in terms of producing mental health professionals trained in couple and family therapy. In this one-hour workshop, the speakers will explore the historical and current landscape of couple and family therapy in Kenya. They will cover key topics such as: 1) common mental and relational health issues in Kenya, 2) The establishment of Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) training programs, 3) The formation of the Systemic Family Therapy Association of Kenya (SFTA-K) as a governing body, and 4) recent initiatives to train Kenyan professionals in relational interventions like emotionally focused therapy. Additionally, the speakers will share their personal journeys as African MFT practitioners, scholars, social justice activists, and pioneers in the CFT profession in Kenya. They will conclude by discussing the future implications for couple and family therapy training, research, and practice in the country.
