SFTC24: Neurodiversity 101: Orienting toward the Neuroverse and Deconstructing our Perceptions on Neurodiversity
CE: 2.00
Speakers: Joshua Corwin, Gina Marie Russo, LMFT, LMHC
Series session 1 of 2: Neurodiversity exists; we are examples. It is more than a model; it is embodied, experiential, and inherently requires a systemic lens to understand. It has multiple forms and presents differently for each individual, regardless of similarities between the community. This educational session will include live examples and dialogues about what living in the neuroverse is like, including exploring common inter- and intra-personal and systemic experiences of members of the neurodiverse community. Join us as we facilitate the co-creation of systemically and neurodiversity-informed foundations for your personal framework as you enter the neuroverse, too. These topics, and more, will be explored further in a second session, titled Neurodiversity Deeper Dive.
Series session 2 of 2: Expanding on and separate from Neurodiversity 101, the participants and facilitators in this session will engage in curious and collaborative dialogue about how individual experiences with, and perceptions of, neurodiversity impact clinical work with neurodiverse clients. Concepts such as ableism, masking, projections, projective identification, the double empathy problem, systemic impacts at each ecological level, masking, and monotropism will be highlighted. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on how they perceive, assign meaning to, and associate with these more complex aspects of working with neurodiverse clients. Participants and facilitators will explore and deconstruct stereotypes associated with different labels and language typically associated with the neuroverse, reframing them from a systemic and neurodiversity-informed worldview.
