SFTC24: Religious Trauma and Ambiguous Loss: Identity, Belonging, and Community

SFTC24: Religious Trauma and Ambiguous Loss: Identity, Belonging, and Community
CE: 1.00

Speaker: Marsha Vaughn PhD

This session will review the recent research on religious trauma as well as the range of potential responses from those who experience it, from remaining within their spiritual community to deconversion. Within the systemic therapy literature, particularly related to trauma and loss, religion and spirituality are often identified as resources or supports in experiencing post-traumatic growth and healing. While research on religious trauma, deconstruction, and deconversion is growing, few studies address the internal and relational struggles of changing or leaving a belief system so deeply tied to one’s identity and social networks. Pauline Boss’s theory of ambiguous loss may provide guidance to help systemic therapists and clients manage the ambivalence that often accompanies this work.
