Members of the LGBTQIA+ community face a number of disparities and challenges in accessing care. There is a significant need for expanding access to affirming and appropriate care for LGBTQ+ individuals. LGBTQ+ individuals face staggering difficulties when it comes to compassionate and readily-available physical health care, mental health care and school support. ?LGBTQ+ identifying individuals are at a high risk of disproportionate negative health outcomes and barriers to affirming and appropriate care. ?Nearly one-quarter of transgender patients forgo medical care due to a concern that a provider will mistreat them due to their gender identity.? At least, 8% of LGB respondents and 29% of transgender respondents in a national survey indicated that care providers had refused to see them on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. ?LGB youth attempt suicide five times more than their non-LGB peers.? Rural communities are on average less accepting of protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.? This presentation will provide an understanding on the importance of creating an inclusive care environment, the ethics of caring for this population, increased education for care teams, and expanding access to care.
