Code of Ethics

The AAMFT strives to honor the public trust in marriage and family therapists by setting standards for ethical practice as described in this Code. The ethical standards define professional expectations and are enforced by the AAMFT Ethics Committee. The absence of an explicit reference to a specific behavior or situation in the Code does not mean that the behavior is ethical or unethical.

Side-by-Side Comparison of 2012 and 2015 Codes

A side-by-side comparison of the 2012 AAMFT Code of Ethics and the 2015 AAMFT Code of Ethics was created to clearly depict the changes to the Code.

Ethics Complaint Process

The AAMFT Ethics Committee has the ability to investigate complaints against AAMFT members for alleged violations of the AAMFT Code of Ethics.

Legal and Ethics Consultations

Your membership in AAMFT allows you access to various member benefits, including consultations with AAMFT's legal and ethics staff. All members of AAMFT are eligible to receive Ethical Advisory Opinions. Members in in the following AAMFT membership categories are eligible for Legal Consultations: Associate, Member, Pre-Clinical Fellow, and Clinical Fellow.
